Legion of Talk – Mark Shuttleworth on Ubuntu & Space Travel

Mark Shuttleworth We are happy to announce Mark Shuttleworth as the next speaker in the Legion of talk series. Mark Shuttleworth, who grew up in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa, is an African entrepreneur with a love of technology, innovation, change and space flight.

Mark founded and manages the Ubuntu Foundation, which aims to produce a high quality desktop and server operating system that is freely available all over the world. Mark also formed HBD Venture Capital, a business incubator and venture capital provider and Canonical Ltd., for the promotion and commercial support of free software projects. Previously Mark founded Thawte, the fastest-growing internet certificate authority worldwide before selling it to VeriSign in 1999. In 2001 he formed the Shuttleworth Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to social innovation which also funds educational and free and open source software projects in South Africa.

In April 2002 Mark realized a lifelong dream to fly in space. He spent a year working on the project, including seven months of formal training at Star City in Russia, and almost as much time in medical testing, science program development and negotiations. The First African in Space project was without doubt the most challenging and exciting project any geek could wish for. He was a member of the crew of Soyuz TM-34, launched from Baikonur in Kazakhstan and docked with the International Space Station two days later. The mission included 8 days working on the ISS, conducting a program of South African science experiments and enjoying the extraordinary environment of weightlessness before coming back to earth with a bump.

Gary Vaynerchuk on New Media, Personal Branding and Promotion

gary V

We are very happy to announce Gary Vaynerchuk as the first speaker in the Legion of Talk series. Gary’s dynamic and engaging style has made him a new media sensation and one of the most sought-after speakers around. An immigrant from U.S.S.R., Gary took over his family’s New Jersey wine shop and has brilliantly leveraged the Internet and digital media to dramatically increase sales and inspire legions of loyal fans who watch his daily webcasts on Wine Library TV, his personal blog and follow him on Twitter.

Gary Will be in town speaking to Powells customers as he tours the country talking about wine and his new book “Gary Vaynerchuk’s 101 Wines: Guaranteed to Inspire, Delight, and Bring Thunder to Your World” But we asked Gary if he would talk to us about how he uses digital media to promote a traditional business with amazing results, and he graciously agreed. If you’re into digital media, web-based business or just a fan of Gary’s you won’t want to miss this opportunity to see and meet Gary in person.

Here’s Gary’s official bio:

Gary Vaynerchuk, self-trained wine expert, is revolutionizing the wine industry. His blog, Wine Library TV (affectionately known as The Thunder Show), boasts a cult-like following resulting from his enthusiastic, unconventional, and often irreverent wine commentary. In the name of “expanding one’s palate”, Gary convinced Conan O’Brien to lick salted rocks and shared samples of dirt and grass with Ellen Degeneres.

With a wealth of knowledge and an entrepreneurial spirit, Gary rebranded the family business as Wine Library. Within a five year time period, Wine Library grew from a $4 million dollar business to a $45 million business.

What raised Gary’s notoriety even more than his business acumen was his foresight. Inspired by sites such as youtube.com and facebook.com, Gary leveraged technology to reach an untapped audience. His daily 20 minute webcasts caught the attention of a demographic new to wine and eager to learn. Within a short time, beer sales were outpaced by wine. While his youthful following broke down barriers in the wine industry, the business world (and Web 2.0) admired Gary for creating a new generation of branding, focusing on the internet.

Gary’s unique identity as both a wine expert and a “real person” has reinvented the concept of wine tasting for a new generation. His first book, 101 Wines Guaranteed to Inspire, Delight, and Bring Thunder to Your World, was released in May of 2008 and is available in bookstores nationwide.

Legion of Tech Happy Hour: June 26th

Please RSVP on Upcoming as attending to help us get a count for the event.

We have been holding regular BarCamp meetup events for a couple of years; however, we recently realized that we’ve outgrown the Jive breakroom, and we’ve evolved away from the BarCamp Meetup name. So, we’ve renamed this monthly event to the Legion of Tech Happy Hour, and the event will now be held outside on the back patio of Plan B.

Thursday, June 26, 2008
5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Plan B
1305 SE 8th

The intent is to get a group of cool people interested in technology together to chat over drinks on the fourth Thursday of every month. Anyone working in high-tech is welcome to attend. Conversations usually range from wikis to open source to blogs to who knows what!
