BarCampPortland Coming May 1 & 2 – Want to help?

logobarcampportlandOur 3rd BarCampPortland event is coming on May 1 and 2! We know that May is still really far away, but we wanted to get you thinking about BarCampPortland now.  As always, we can use some help with the event, so we are having a volunteer meeting next week! We love to have you join us to learn more about how you can help.

Legion of Tech Happy Hour Meetup with Waffles Oct. 23rd

Todd had the best description of this event on Twitter: “Sweet waffles, savory waffles, beer, wine, art & geeks all converging in a glorious orgy of awesome.”

Thursday October 23, 2008 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Jace Gace 2045 SE Belmont

Please RSVP for this event on Upcoming.

These are super informal meetups where we hang out, talk about geeky stuff (wikis, open source, new technologies, openid, …), and wind down with like-minded people over beverages.

Since this is the last meetup of the year (it doesn’t make sense to have a 4th Thursday meetup in Nov/Dev to conflict with the holidays), we wanted to do something a little different …

Thanks to a sponsor who wishes to remain anonymous we will be having the meetup at Jace Gace. Our sponsor will cover the fee to rent the space for the evening, but you will be on your own to pay for drinks / waffles. Have you ever been to Jace Gace? They have the most amazing waffles, art and they have beer / wine! Mmmm, waffles, art, geeky fun, and alcohol. Heaven.

WhereCamp PDX

This October 17th-19th local geo-geeks of all stripes will be gathering for the very first WhereCamp PDX. WhereCamp is an event that started in the Bay Area in 2007 to continue conversations from the Where 2.0 conference. Legion of Tech is organizing a Portland version to show off the amazing, fun geographic technology activity we have. This is not just an event for specialists: we would like anyone who is interested in the intersection of people, place, and technology to participate.

You can find out more on the WhereCamp PDX blog, and RSVP and find more event details on Upcoming. We are also looking for sponsors.

Summer Coders’ Social

Here’s another great event coming up: Portland’s multi-user group coders’ social is back for summer, with a picnic August 3rd at Laurelhurst Park. It’s happening 11am-5pm at picnic area E.

The winter event was a fun board and card game meetup at CubeSpace, and Sam Keen and the other organizers have planned a family-friendly barbecue to follow up. Mozilla is sponsoring burgers and hotdogs (plus a vegan version), and the rest is potluck. RSVP with your side dish of choice if you’ll be there.

Who Are We? A survey to find out

Just in time for BarCamp, the Legion of Tech is doing a survey to find out more about Portland’s technology community. We’d like to know about your demographics and activities, for event planning and as a resource for the rest of the community. Please go to http://moourl.com/lotsurvey and fill it out, then spread the word to your friends and coworkers.

BarCampPortland and Twitter

Portland has a huge Twitter community, and we will be using Twitter for updates during the event. Please follow BarCampPortland on Twitter to get real-time updates during the event. We will also have a space on your badge for your twitter name, so if you haven’t yet joined Twitter, now would be a great time!

On another note, things are coming together very nicely! We had our final planning meeting last night. Most of the sponsorship money has been received, and we are using it to purchase things that will make the event awesome.

We are still looking for volunteers, so if you would like to volunteer, you should contact Raven Zachary.

Startupalooza is Saturday, March 29th

Don’t forget to RSVP for Startupalooza being held this Saturday, March 29th from Noon until 6:30 at CubeSpace!

We have a great line-up!

Legion of Tech hopes to see you there. We might even have some Legion of Tech laptop stickers for you (assuming that the stars align for printing / shipping)!

Don’t Forget: Ignite Portland 2 Coming on Feb. 5!

We’ve had a tremendous response to this Ignite! We have 477 people registered to attend (so far), we were featured in the Oregonian, and we have a great presentation line up!

However, it isn’t too late to attend. You can still RSVP on Upcoming.

The Details:
Tuesday, February 5, 2008
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Bagdad Theater and Pub 3702 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97214

What is Ignite Portland? A bunch of fast-paced, interesting presentations – 20 slides for 15 seconds each. Our mantra is “share burning ideas” – just about any topic will do, as long as it’s interesting. From tech to crafts to business to just plain fun! There will be time to network and chat after each series of presentations.

Some Background on Legion of Tech

Legion of Tech is currently in the early stages of forming as a non-profit organization. We have submitted the paperwork to incorporate as a non-profit in Oregon, but have not yet received confirmation that our application will be accepted.

After organizing BarCamp Portland and Ignite Portland, we realized that it was very difficult to manage sponsorships and other logistics of these events without having a legal entity. For example, at Ignite Portland, Raven signed a waiver making him personally responsible if anything happened to the facility (we had insurance, but this could have been really ugly if anything bad happened.) We are forming Legion of Tech to allow us to better manage these Portland community events.

This organization has two primary functions: first, we organize key community events like BarCampPortland and Ignite Portland; second, we provide resources and help to organizers of other community technology events. Specifically, the purpose of this organization is to

  • Grow and nurture the local Portland technology community through educational, not-for-profit, community-run events.
  • Make it easier for community members to organize technology events.
  • Provide resources and assistance for technology community events.

Next Steps for the organization:

  • We will be having the first board meeting this week to ratify the bylaws and board members for Legion of Tech (we will post the minutes, board member names, and bylawys here on the blog)
  • After ratification of the board and the bylaws and acceptance of our application to incorporate as an Oregon non-profit, we will begin filing the 501(c) (3) paperwork to see if we can qualify as a tax-exempt organization.

We will continue to post more information and additional pages here as we work through the details.  We are also working on a logo, which will drive the look and feel for the site, so please excuse the newbie theme look while we get organized.
